Project Overview
To collaborate with public health agencies (PHAs) and national partner organizations to modernize public health data systems by supporting efficient and effective data exchange.
The CDC data modernization initiative (DMI) highlights the need for improved public health data sharing systems, allowing for actionable insights and reduced burden for healthcare providers and public health agencies. The purpose of the Implementation Center Program is to reduce the burden on public health agencies and other data providers to seamlessly exchange information for rapid detection of and response to health threats.

The Public Health Infrastructure Grant (PHIG) National Partners (ASTHO, NNPHI, PHAB) selected Mathematica to serve as an Implementation Center to support the CDC Data Modernization Initiative (DMI).
As an Implementation Center, Mathematica will support key goals:
- Support public health agencies to adopt the latest health IT standards to exchange data across health data providers.
- Enable participation in data exchange networks such as the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA).
- Provide technical implementation support to improve the timeliness, completeness, and accuracy of health data used to detect and prevent public health threats.
- Disseminate lessons learned and effective strategies with the broader community involved in public health data exchange.
The COVID-19 public health emergency showed an urgent need to build a robust public health data ecosystem in every state and territory. This initiative will provide critical support to states and localities to modernize their public health data systems, ensuring a higher level of readiness for the next crisis. Through this initiative, public health experts will have the information they need to make the best possible decisions to respond to emergencies and save lives.
