Research Support Services for Employment of Young Adults on the Autism Spectrum
Prepared for:
U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Disability Employment Policy
Key Findings
- Our assessment of 11 datasets found that identification of autism varies across sources.
- Surveys focused on specific populations may not accurately represent the larger group of young adults on the autism spectrum.
- Small sample sizes of individuals on the autism spectrum limit analysis options.
- Most datasets are not readily available, and employment information is often limited.
There has been limited rigorous research on interventions that can improve employment outcomes for young adults on the autism spectrum. Several existing datasets include employment-related information for young adults on the autism spectrum that researchers can use to shed light on the topic. However, these datasets are limited in their ability to provide a detailed assessment of this population and employment outcomes. This issue brief presents an inventory of 11 such datasets, including both administrative and survey data sources.
