This Spotlight analysis focuses on falls within the Network of Patient Safety Databases (NPSD) since they are one of the most frequently reported patient safety events in the NPSD. The objective of this Spotlight is two-fold: (1) further describe the data mining method, its operationalization, and how it offers additional insights compared to the traditional summary statistical methods applied to the NPSD data; and (2) highlight the major frequent pattern findings beyond those presented in the 2022 NPSD Fall Supplementary analyses. Using the standardized non-identifiable falls data available from the NPSD, we also examined two aspects of fall interventions: 1) the interventions that were in place to prevent or lessen impact of falls; and 2) the interventions in place for patients with different demographic or risk characteristics.
