Diversity and Inclusion in STEM: Evaluation of the National Science Foundation INCLUDES Program

2016-2019
Prepared For

National Science Foundation

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Inclusion across the Nation of Communities of Learners of Underrepresented Discoverers in Engineering and Science (INCLUDES) program is an initiative to improve the preparation and participation of people from groups historically underrepresented and underserved in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers.

These groups include women, racial and ethnic minorities, veterans, and persons with disabilities and low socioeconomic backgrounds. NSF INCLUDES seeks to support innovative models, networks, partnerships, technical capabilities, and research that will enable the science and engineering workforce in the United States to thrive.

In collaboration with 2M Research, Mathematica is conducting a systematic review of NSF INCLUDES program documents to help NSF identify what activities and which targeted populations it supports through its programming. Results of formative analyses will inform programmatic adjustments that address gaps in the program solicitation outreach efforts and program support. Ultimately, this portfolio analysis will improve the design of a larger developmental evaluation of the INCLUDES initiative.
