Project Overview
To assess and identify opportunities to improve state policies and practices on the data that health care systems report to public health agencies.
State and local public health officials need timely and accurate data from health care facilities, laboratories, and providers to spot risks in and tailor services to each community. Examining how well current policies and practices support this goal will guide efforts to improve public health data reporting.
The Pew Charitable Trusts and Mathematica worked together to understand public health reporting policies and practices throughout the United States.
Mathematica worked with The Pew Charitable Trusts, the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists and the American Immunization Registry Association to assess the policies and practices of data exchange for public health in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and New York City. This work informs Pew's efforts to improve reporting of public health data and serve as the basis for research publications on state laws and regulations, data systems, and processes for electronic case reporting, electronic lab reporting, syndromic surveillance, and immunization information systems. This research is also a resource for public health agencies and policymakers.
To collect information for this assessment, Pew contracted with Mathematica to interview state public health surveillance leaders and legal counsel from fall 2022 to spring 2023. These interviews build on an earlier scan of state public health websites and other public resources conducted in summer 2021.
