In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a team of Mathematica data scientists, software developers, and epidemiologists developed the 19 and Me COVID-19 risk calculator, enabling users to estimate their individual risk scores for COVID-19. As part of a project for VITO, an independent Flemish research organization specializing in clean technology and sustainable development, Mathematica is now deploying the calculator to empower the Flemish community in self-managing their health. Using the personalized tool, individuals can receive their customized risk score for COVID-19. The project, called BIBOPP (Citizens in Motion Through Data on Prevention), is funded by the Flemish government and is being conducted in collaboration with Flemish general practitioner group Domus Medica and living lab LiCalab.
Mathematica will deploy and host the 19 and Me application programming interface through an Amazon Web Services platform compliant with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation. In addition, Mathematica’s health experts will provide consulting services to customize the U.S.-based COVID-19 exposure model to the Flemish local conditions.
“As an organization that has worked in public health for decades, we’re used to pivoting quickly to meet the urgent need for data and tools for governments, health care decision makers, providers, and the public,” said Cindy Hu, Mathematica senior data scientist and project director. “We’re delighted we can provide global solutions to address this pandemic and help the Flemish community navigate COVID-19.”
Mathematica and its partners are applying their collective knowledge and experience at the intersection of data, analytics, policy, and practice to help decision makers plan an effective and equitable response to COVID-19.
