The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has released three new data files to help policymakers, health system leaders, and health services researchers better understand the structure of diverse health systems and address pressing questions about costs, quality, and access to care locally and nationally.
Mathematica partnered with AHRQ to create these files and other important resources for the agency’s Compendium of U.S. Health Systems, a publicly available national database with information on 640 U.S. health systems and their affiliated hospitals and group practices.
The new data files include the following:
- Outpatient site linkage file. Provides data on more than 283,000 outpatient sites in 2022, including information on practice type, specialty, and size, and whether sites are in medically underserved or health professional shortage areas.
- Nursing home linkage file. Includes 2020–2022 data on nearly 15,000 nursing homes, including information on location, system affiliation, and ownership.
- Home health care linkage file. Provides 2020–2022 data on health care, home dialysis, and home hospice providers. Includes information on location and ownership for nearly 13,000 home health care organizations.
Along with the files, AHRQ developed a data visualization tool that allows users to see how the ownership types of health care practices break down across different states.
The Compendium of U.S. Health Systems is a vital source of data for states and health care leaders looking to better understand health systems. Mathematica’s Health Systems Dashboard combines data from the Compendium and other sources to help users compare hospital readmission rates for various types of health care systems across states.
