DC-area health care leaders recognize the inevitable shift from fee-for-service to value-based payment and the need for their organizations to develop population-management capabilities. Nevertheless, most hospitals are continuing to emphasize fee-for-service strategies. A new report examines market trends such as hospitals' increasing use of ambulatory care networks and facilities as a strategy to attract the region's affluent and well-insured patients. However, it also looks at how hospitals are using these new networks to position themselves for population health management under value-based payment. On the whole, the report finds that the DC-area health care market has changed at a slower pace than many metropolitan markets nationwide. Mathematica hosted a related briefing on trends shaping the DC health care market. The Jayne Koskinas Ted Giovanis Foundation for Health and Policy funded both the report and the event.
