Educational accountability for schools based on their performance of their students has been a core element of federal policy since the passage of the federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) two decades ago. It has been the subject of heated debate, and there is considerable uncertainty about its political future. I argue that a well-designed accountability system can be one important tool for promoting improved educational performance, alongside other policy tools.
