This tip sheet details opportunities for states to improve the Medicare Savings Programs (MSPs) eligibility determination process and streamline enrollment into MSP benefits by aligning MSP eligibility criteria with those used for Medicare Part D Low-Income Subsidy (LIS) program. It provides a brief overview of MSP eligibility and existing tools that states can use to streamline the MSP enrollment process, as well as details regarding three specific MSP/LIS alignment approaches: (1) aligning income and asset disregard policies, (2) aligning family size requirements for determining applicable income, and (3) aligning dollar limits of eligibility criteria.
