Key Findings
  • Participants in ENRM activities had a high adoption rate of conservation agriculture and land management practices.
  • Grantees found integrating both ENRM and SGEF activities was more effective than targeting only one type of activity.
  • Close to 7 percent of land area in the Shire River Basin experienced land cover change between 2015 and 2017, with overall trends suggesting deforestation and cropland expansion.
  • As the project has yet to affect a reduction in weeds and sediment in the Shire River, it is too early to assess higher-level outcomes on power generation and reliability.

Millennium Challenge Corporation contracted Mathematica to conduct an independent evaluation of the Environmental and Natural Resource Management (ENRM) project. This report focuses on the evaluation of ENRM and Social and Gender Enhancement Fund (SGEF) grants, one aspect of the ENRM project. This presentation shares interim findings from case studies of five of the grants and from research questions related to ENRM project implementation, outcomes, and sustainability.
