Download
This article summarizes findings from eight focus groups that were conducted to better understand the factors that influence patients’ decisions at the point of care. We focused on elements that might promote or interfere with a patient’s acceptance of an evidence-based recommendation. A patient’s relationship with a physician emerged as the strongest influence on whether participants would accept or reject a physician’s recommendation. Various patient characteristics and a patient’s financial capacity were also important influences. These findings point to the potential for interventions that improve communications and relationships between physicians and patients to promote evidence-based care.
