Connecting young children with online education when schools are closed relies on the participation of learning partners—children’s parents or guardians, other adults in the home, or older siblings. At the same time, isolation magnifies the influence of family background and home on students’ achievement. Parents might struggle economically. Families might lack reliable Internet connections. Multiple siblings might need to share a single device. And teachers face their own challenges, balancing classroom responsibilities, teaching their own children, and caring for family members.

This webinar reviewed the research on the home and parenting characteristics that support young children’s learning. Our presenters also discussed interventions, such as home visiting, coaching parents, and text messaging, that can improve support for children at home. They also addressed ways that state and local education agencies can strengthen support for remote learning over the longer term as children return to school.

This webinar is for teachers; principals; administrators from state education agencies, districts, and schools; and others interested in facilitating young children’s learning needs and addressing equity concerns.

Our presenters included:

Christine Ross, senior researcher, Mathematica
Jaimie Grazi, research analyst, Mathematica
