Creating a Trauma-Informed System of Care for Formerly Incarcerated Dads
Many fathers who have been incarcerated experienced traumatic childhoods and/or traumatic situations in adulthood. Research suggests these men are often survivors and witnesses of violent attacks while imprisoned. Upon exiting the criminal justice system, these experiences can hinder successful reintegration into the community. In addition, experiencing the effects of trauma could create challenges for responsible fatherhood (RF) programs seeking to reconnect formerly incarcerated individuals with their families. To support RF grantees in their efforts to serve fathers who have a history of trauma and criminal justice involvement, the Office of Planning, Research, and Evaluation (OPRE) initiated a study under the Parents and Children Together evaluation. Specifically, the study examines how RF programs can create a trauma-informed system of care for fathers exiting the criminal justice system.
Mathematica and OPRE hosted a webinar on September 17, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Presenters shared insights into strategies for developing trauma-informed systems of care and lessons from programs that address trauma among fathers. Our panel includes:
