Project Overview
To provide a comprehensive picture of school meal programs in school year 2024-2025.
The National School Foods study is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), the agency that runs school meal programs. The study will collect nationally representative data from School Food Authorities (SFAs), schools, and students to provide a better understanding of which foods are served to students and how, the cost of serving foods to students, and what students like and don't like to eat during the school day. This information will help inform school meal policy at the local, state, and national level, as the data collected from this study will help FNS, SFAs, and schools make decisions about how best to serve healthy foods that students that student like to eat.

The study will examine program operations, the nutritional quality of school meals, school meal costs and revenues, student and parent satisfaction with the programs, plate waste, and students’ dietary intakes. It will collect data from State agencies, School Food Authorities (SFAs), schools, students and their parents. The 2024-2025 National School Foods Study will build on past studies, including the first School Nutrition and Meal Cost Study, which was also conducted by Mathematica, the School Food Purchase Study-III, and the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program Evaluation. Additionally, the National School Foods Study will expand on past studies by including an in-depth assessment of the cost to produce meals in Alaska, Guam, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands for the first time.
Learn About Findings From an Earlier Study
This study builds on the previous School Nutrition and Meal Cost Study, the findings of which have provided critical information to inform policy in recent years. The new study will produce related findings on how school meals programs have changed in the last ten years.
