Kimberly Smith

Kimberly Smith leads Mathematica’s international foundation and non-governmental organization (NGO) practice area, which includes a diverse portfolio of work in health and nutrition, education and workforce development, food systems and agriculture, and energy and climate change. With a background in health economics and demography, Smith has 20 years of experience providing research, evaluation, and strategy services to foundations, donor collaboratives, multilateral organizations, NGOs, and public agencies. Her experience spans Africa, Asia, and the United States.

Since joining Mathematica in 2009, Smith has directed and supported measurement, evaluation, and learning (MEL) initiatives for various foundations, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, David and Lucile Packard Foundation, and Rockefeller Foundation, among others. These efforts have involved designing and implementing comprehensive MEL approaches for complex global- and country-level initiatives, rigorous and mixed-methods evaluations, strategy and portfolio reviews, performance measurement, and data-driven strategy consulting. Her content expertise covers diverse health policy areas, including health systems strengthening; reproductive, maternal, and child health; nutrition; and adolescent health.

Before joining Mathematica, Smith held positions at Abt Associates, the World Bank, the Population Council, and UNICEF. She has published in several peer-reviewed journals, including American Economic Journal: Applied Economics, Academic Pediatrics, Journal of Aging & Health, and Social Science & Medicine. Smith holds a Ph.D. and an M.P.A. from Princeton University.
